Davis noticed one of his customers kept buying cloth to reinforce torn pants and this gave Davis an idea to reinforce the points of straing with copper rivets.
Such places were the strain was happening were the now pocket corners and the base where the button fly was. This worked so well that Davis wanted to patent the idea, but couldn't due to his lack of money, so he suggested that Levi would take the patent and they would go into business together.
Levi accepted, and the rest is history, and turned out to be the worlds best selling item of clothing in the 1890's with the first pair of Levis 501 jeans taking over in 1890.
